All wineries in this post are organic, but do you know what a biodynamic winery is? A biodynamic winery practices sustainable farming by following natural cycles such as the moon’s cycles. It emphasizes the interconnectedness of the ecosystem, aiming to produce wines that authentically reflect the terroir with minimal intervention. Each winery has its natural wine selection and relies on native yeasts for fermentation.

Natural wine cellars

The natural wine scene is gaining momentum, and the Penedes region couldn’t be an exception. Interestingly, this silent revolution is being led primarily by young entrepreneurs dedicating their souls and minds to a new philosophy of life. More in balance with nature and the health of the people.

10. La Fita

Penedes young wine maker

La Fita is a minimal intervention project led by Martí Torrallardona, a young winemaker and entrepreneur from Sant Sadurní the Anoia. He uses the best harvests of his grandparents and cousins, 42 hectares in total, allowing him to access an exceptional selection of vineyards.

For me, minimal intervention does not mean zero sulfur, but I believe that, at certain times, a small amount is necessary to achieve the style of wine I am looking for. What is essential is spontaneous fermentation to capture the essence of Penedès and show it to the world. I make fresh wines with low alcohol content and high acidity (a consequence of climate change), and I use different materials such as glass, oak, and steel demijohns.

I like the phrase “minimum intervention but maximum precision”—always knowing what is happening in the wine but intervening as little as possible. All wines have a total sulfur level of around 30-40 mg/L to guarantee their stability.

11. Vinestar

Vinestar was born in 2022 after falling in love with a 4 ha Xarel·lo and Macabeu estate in Can Rossell de la Serra, between Sant Sadurní and Torrelavit. It is a magical place and environment, surrounded by forest, with very different microplots and soils.
We fell in love with the place and, after a lot of effort, managed to buy the estates. We both come from different perspectives in the world of wine: Riki is an oenologist and has visited different wineries in different wine regions. Ariadna, on the other hand, is trained as a sommelier and has spent many years working in the commercial and wine tourism experience departments of Gramona.

Our idea is to make wines that express the vineyard and its uniqueness. The best way we have found to do this is through the ancestral method. Our Vinestar project only produces sparkling wines using the ancestral method.
Inspired by the concept of Recoltant-Manipulant de la Champagne, we work in our vineyard and control all the processes. All the bottles pass through our hands, and we care for them with all the love and care in the world.

12. Paret Seca

The Cellar Paret Seca makes wine at the Cal Costas farmhouse in Font-rubí, a nursery of micro cellars that share tools and facilities, but each has its tanks and grapes.

The visit to the cellar is a tour of the vineyard and then an explanation of the production process, with the particularities of natural wines of not adding sulfites and taking great care to clean and protect the must.
Also, breakfast in the shared restaurant and tasting four of the Paret Seca wines are possible.
The visits are only for groups of at least four people and are by appointment on Saturdays and Sunday mornings. They cost 25 euros per person. For more details, you can check the winery website.

Lunch in a winery

In the Penedès region, you’ll discover signature cuisine restaurants that showcase the area’s rich culinary heritage. These establishments are celebrated for their creative use of local ingredients, offering dishes that highlight the vibrant flavors of the region. You can also have great food experiences at some of the above wineries. These are  the three wineries I would recommend for a brunch with vine views:

  • Giró del Gorner (#5): Spanish tapas paired with Penedes wine and Cava.
  • Eudald Massana Noya (#8): brunch with vine views.
  • Albet i Noya (#9): premium brunch in a private environment with wine and cava.
