A tour to 10 unique wineries in Priorat
The Priorat region is unique in the world for its world-class wine. Crafted by experienced winemakers who mastered the rough terroir of the area, composed mainly of black slate where the old Carignan and Grenache vines survive. In this list of ten wineries in Priorat, we included seven DOQ Priorat, and three DO Montsant cellars to showcase the importance of the region in winemaking. You can choose the wineries from the list below and navigate easily in the post before choosing your next big wine trip.
Facts about the Priorat region
Priorat is a region southwest of Barcelona with a high density of wineries. Over 150 wineries are spread over two wine appellations and cover an area of about 500 square kilometers. These wineries are small compared to other wine regions, producing about 40.000 bottles on average. It’s a tiny amount if we compare it to different wine regions. This is due to the uniqueness of the terroir, which stresses the vines and doesn’t allow for higher yields. This is well accepted by winemakers, who focus on quality rather than quantity—giving the Priorat a name respected worldwide by every wine-lover.
One region – two wine appellations
The region of Priorat is divided into two wine appellations: the DO Montsant and the DOQ Priorat. Both make incredible wines with very similar characteristics. But there is a significant difference: the soil. Most of Montsant is clay, while Priorat is mostly slate. This last one stresses the vines, producing lower yields and more concentrated wines. Montsant has a point of freshness coming from the Clay soils that capture the water much better. From here, both have arid and continental weather with some influence from the Mediterranean Sea and harvest, mainly the local grapes of Carignan and Grenache.
