Priorat wine tour: a relaxing journey to a fascinating region

Priorat is one of only two Spanish regions to hold the D.O.Q. Label. (Denomination of Qualified Origin), sharing this prestigious status with La Rioja. It is an excellent destination for any wine lover visiting Barcelona. The region is famous for bold red wines sourced from old Grenache and Carignan vines that thrive in the rugged terrain of black slate, known locally as llicorella. A Priorat wine tour offers a fantastic, immersive way to discover the magic of this region. Dive into the heart of rural Catalonia to uncover its best-kept secret and savor its exceptional food and wine

Where to start the Priorat winery quest?

The Priorat wine region is located 140 kilometers south of Barcelona, and 50 km west of Tarragona. Its rugged terrain makes it very difficult to reach by public transport. Its only train station is in Falset, the capital of Priorat, and from there, buses are limited. Therefore, the Priorat can be visited on a leisurely ride departing from Barcelona in 2 hours or from Tarragona in 1 hour. At this point, we have to decide if we visit Priorat on a day tour or a multi-day tour.

Experience the Priorat in a one-day tour.

If you come to Barcelona for a few days and want to make the most of it, including a one-day tour to Priorat can be an excellent decision for every wine lover. This way, you can still experience Barcelona and include a perfect wine tour to your list, which will be a great escape from the city. This experience can be on a small-group tour or a private tour, depending on how much you would like to customize it or whether you want to meet other wine lovers like you.

Diving into the richness of the region for a multi-day tour

If wine is really your thing and you dream of visiting a unique wine region in Spain, spending two or three days in Priorat can be an excellent choice for you and your partner. This will give you time to visit some well-known wineries at your own pace, taking your time to sink into every little village of the D.O.Q., creating a connection that will stay forever in your memory. Priorat offers a variety of small producers, cozy lodges, and high-quality restaurants worth experiencing for a genuine food-and-wine tour.

Small-group tour: a seamless way to discover Priorat

Priorat is far from the city and has little demand from travellers. This is the reason why Priorat is hard to find in most tourist agencies’ portfolios. It is only available at some specialized agencies that offer winery tours. Wino Tours is the only provider of small-group tours to Priorat, offering you the opportunity to visit the region at a competitive price. The small-group tour is also a great way to meet other wine enthusiasts and curious travellers like you.

Here is the regular tour, starting every Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday at 9:30 from Barcelona or at 10:30 from Tarragona. The cost of this tour is 195€ per person, plus lunch expenses ranging from 33 to 45€ per person.

  • Hotel pick-up in Barcelona, Tarragona, or Sitges: The tour begins with a morning pick-up from your accommodation, followed by a two-hour drive (from Barcelona) to the first destination.
  • Family winery in Porrera: We will start the day with a tour at a family winery in Porrera. What is fascinating about our chosen winery is its wine selection, as it is one of the few in Priorat to offer old vintages from 10+ years ago at its tastings. These are bottles valued at the most affordable price, ranging from 30 to 100€ per bottle, a real perk in Priorat.
  • Lunch stop at Gratallops: The tour will take you to Gratallops, the most important wine-producing town in Priorat. At our second stop, we will have a three-course lunch and a wine tasting of 4 different wines. The winery is well known, founded by one of the five fantastic people who gave the Priorat region its name.
  • Tasting wine up in the vineyards. The last stop will be in the same town as Gratallops. At a great location to have a previous tasting of D.O.Q. Priorat is in the middle of the vineyards. Looking at some fascinating views.
  • Hotel drop-off in Barcelona, Tarragona, or Sitges.

Porrera & Gratallops: two iconic villages worth exploring

  1. Vall Llach: Founded by singer Lluís Llach, this winery was born from a strong social commitment to improving the living conditions of local field workers. It produces high-quality wines, including Mas de la Rosa, which is also recognized as a GVQ wine.
