An easy way to do wine tourism from Barcelona is to organize a train trip. This is an easy task thanks to the Renfe railway network, which offers endless possibilities to travel by train. Connecting us with a wide range of wineries and wine tourism activities to suit everyone: couples looking to spend a day together, friends who want to have fun and families looking for a quiet place.
Wine tourism has it all and if we also add visiting the wineries by train, then we win twice. Traveling by train has many advantages: the first is that it allows us to enjoy a getaway without contributing to our carbon footprint. In addition to being free to enjoy the tastings and pairings without fear of testing positive in a breathalyzer test.
1. Visiting the capital of Cava: Sant Sadurní d’Anoia
The town of Sant Sadurní d’Anoia is one of the most recommended places for a train trip. It is less than an hour from Barcelona and is easily reached by train on the R4 line.
In this town of 12,000 inhabitants, you will find the famous Freixenet and Codorniu wineries, as well as the Cava interpretation center. interpretation center of Cava . A place where you can immerse yourself and learn about the world of cava in the Penedés region, as well as its history and production.
Another highly recommended wine tourism activity is to combine a visit to the Simón Coll chocolate factory with the Recaredo winery, part of the prestigious Corpinnat sparkling wine brand. We recommend this visit to the Recaredo winery with chocolate tasting at the Simón Coll factory for €45.
Reaching the wineries by bicycle
Another fun way of wine tourism is to reach the wineries by pedaling an electric bicycle. This is a very widespread modality in the Penedés region. Partly thanks to the fact that the Lavern-Subirats train station has the Bikemotions bike store at its disposal. This makes access by train from Barcelona very easy. The stop is located one station beyond Sant Sadurní d’Anoia.
As soon as you arrive in this small village, you will be in the middle of the vineyards and with the help of an electric bicycle you will be able to visit the wineries of the region. We recommend this route through the beautiful village of Sant Pau d’Ordal and its surroundings, as well as the wine tasting in this biodynamic winery.
Cava guilera: A winery accessible by train
The Cava Guilera winery is another winery you can visit by train. It is located a few meters from the Lavern-Subirats train stop. An opportunity to escape from the city and be in the middle of the vineyards. Here you will feel at home in the company of the Guilera family, who have been producing high quality sparkling wines for 4 generations. We are able to obtain long aging cavas at very affordable prices. Like this pairing of cavas with cheese that I recommend trying.
A horseback ride and a winery near Barcelona
Another recommended activity if you want to spend a day in the Penedés, not far from Barcelona and doing something original, is to take a horseback ride through the vineyards. For this activity we have chosen the Excelsior Equestrian Center, because they are very professional and the horses are very well cared for, it’s a pleasure to see them! This tour can be combined with the Cava Guilera winery mentioned above, as it is a 20-minute walk from the equestrian center. Here you can book the tasting of 3 cavas in the winery with the horseback ride.
