Alt Penedes region
The Alt Penedés region is located in the province of Barcelona and is one of the 4 regions included in the Penedes Wine Appellation. Thanks to its Mediterranean climate and relatively flat terrain, the Alt Penedes is one of Catalonia’s best areas for growing vines. That is why there are many wineries where you can do winery tours. In addition, the Penedés has different subzones that have a great variety of landscapes and microclimates. This makes the Alt Penedes a very diverse region. The most important subzones are as follows:
- El massís del Garraf and the Ordal mountains: It is in the coastal mountain range, so it is a mountainous area with a mild climate and excellent views of Montserrat.
- Alts d’Ancosa i Costers de l’Anoia: It is in the pre-coastal mountain range, so it is a colder area and also the most humid. The Anoia river passes by.
- Turrons de Vilafranca i Costers de Lavernó: the central area of the region where we find the most important wineries and towns.

Sant Sadurní d’Anoia
It is considered the Capital of Cava and is home to the most important wineries in the Penedés region. Like the Codorniu and Freixenet wineries, which you can see once you get there by train. Another interesting place is the Cava interpretation center, with a very interesting exhibition on the history of cava and the region.
In the village of Sant Sadurní d’Anoia we find a winery that we highly recommend to visit. This is the Recaredo winery, one of the oldest wineries making biodynamic cava. Using the same traditional methods for more than a century. Like disgorging by hand, a very unusual practice that at Recaredo you will be able to see on their winery tour.
In addition, just 50 meters away, you will find the Chocolates Simón i Coll factory, which you can visit with the family and taste their chocolates.

Avinyonet del Penedes
The most beautiful place to visit is the monastery of “Sant Sebastiá dels Gorgs”. A Romanesque-style Benedictine monastery that was built in the 10th century AD. Inside there is a small cloister that can be visited on the 1st and 3rd Saturday of each month at 11 am.
Near Avinyonet there are two highly recommended wineries that you can visit. The biodynamic winery Eudald Massana Noya, and the organic winery Albet i Noya. Both wineries can be visited with a bike tour that includes wine tasting in Eudald Massana Noya and lunch at the Albet i Noya winery.

The castle of Sant Martí Sarroca
Probably the most charming place in the Penedés, is this castle built on top of a cliff. From there, there are spectacular views of the region. An important monument of Catalan Gothic style that can be visited from Thursday to Sunday for 3€.
As for wine-tasting experiences in the area, you can go to a family winery called Giró del Gorner. They have an interesting selection of wines and cavas and they offer a very interesting winery tour that includes a nice lunch outdoors.

Subirats
The castle of Subirats stands on the Ordal mountains and offers breathtaking views of the region. The castle is part of what was considered in medieval times as the Penedés line. A border line between the Christian kingdoms and the Moors.
